DKIM Surveys

DKIM is a new standard from the IETF for providing end-to-end message integrity and domain-based sender authentication. This enhancement to the basic email protocols on the Internet is a critically important tool for combating the explosive flow of phishing. DKIM is useful right now to curtail phishing, but its potential to bring a climate of accountability to Internet email will not be achieved until it is widely adopted. Sendmail.org strongly encourages the managers of all Internet-facing MTAs to deploy DKIM as soon as practical.

In order to track the adoption of DKIM we have created several DKIM adoption surveys as a service to the community. It is not meaningful to poll all the domains on the Internet today, as more than 50% are “parked,” i.e. reserved but not in use. Instead, we have constructed a set of focused surveys that should provide more useful indicators.

Fortune 1000 DKIM survey

A survey of email authentication protocol deployment by Fortune 1000 corporations.

US Banking survey

A survey of email authentication protocol deployment by banking institutions insured by the United States FDIC.

We realize that most of these surveys are US centric. This is only because these domain lists were readily available to us at sendmail.org. If you would like to participate in this project by contributing additional meaningful domain lists or survey data please contact us at dkim_survey@sendmail.org.
